Propecia (Finasteride)
General information
Propecia is a medicine to treat hair loss in men only. Its active ingredient is Finasteride. It's an androgen hormone inhibitor used to treat male pattern hair loss. It can be used only by adult men. It works by preventing the enzyme 5 alpha-reductase from converting testosterone to its active form in the body.
Directions
It is recommended to consult with your doctor regarding right dosage for you. Take it with a full glass of water. The recommended dose of finasteride for male pattern baldness is 1 mg daily taken at the same time each day, with or without food.
Precautions
Before starting your treatment with Propecia you should tell your doctor if you have allergy to the medicine or any other allergy. Еell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: liver disease, prostate cancer, infections, urinary problems.
Contraindications
The patients who are sensitive to the drug, women and children should not use Propecia.
Possible side effect
Dizziness, drowsiness, unusual weakness, trouble sleeping, blurred vision, runny nose are common side effects. More serious side effects are the following: severe dizziness of fainting, prolonged and painful erection, erectile dysfunction, reduced sexual interest, breast enlargement or tenderness, signs of an allergic reaction (e.g., skin rash, itchiness, hives, swelling of the lips or tongue). If you experience one of them you should stop taking Propecia and give a call to your doctor.
Drug interaction
Discuss with your doctor all the medicines, prescription, non-prescription, and herbal medications you are taking before starting your treatment with Propecia.
Missed dose
If you have missed your dose, take it as soon as possible. If you see that it is near the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your usual dosing schedule. Do not take your dose twice.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are chest pain, nausea, irregular heartbeat, and feeling light-headed or fainting.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store them in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
